Senate Energy and Climate Bill Funds Our Energy Block Grant Program President Nickels Announces 1000th Signatory to Mayors Climate Agreement
October 1, 2009 Yesterday, several U.S. Senators, led by Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman Barbara Boxer (CA) and Senate Foreign Relations Chairman John Kerry (MA), unveiled a comprehensive energy and climate plan that dedicates annual resources to our Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. This is a big win for the nation's mayors, and for your many local energy and climate protection efforts. It is the product of your many contacts with your Congressional delegations as well as the recent Lobby Day efforts led by Conference President Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and Vice President Elizabeth Kautz. Specifically, the Boxer/Kerry plan dedicates a portion of the bill's revenues to the EECBG program, providing a sustained and predictable funding stream through 2050. I will soon be calling on you to take additional actions as this legislation moves through the full Senate and later into House/Senate negotiations on a final agreement. I also wanted you to know that tomorrow - Friday, October 2 - President Nickels will announce the 1000th Mayoral Signatory to the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The ceremony will take place during the opening press conference of the Conference's Fall Leadership Meeting in Seattle. Many Conference Members have signed this Agreement so I wanted you to know in case you receive press inquiries related to your continuing climate protection efforts.
If you have any questions on the legislation, please contact Conference staff Debra DeHaney-Howard at 202-861-6702 or ddehaney@usmayors.org, Judy Sheahan at 202-861-6775 or jsheahan@usmayors.org. For details on the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, please contact Kevin McCarty at 202-861-6728 or kmccarty@usmayors.org.
