Conference President Coles Joins National League of Cities for "National Undoing Racism Day" Rally by Crystal Swann September 25, 2000
Conference President Boise Mayor H. Brent Coles along with other honored guests spoke at the National League of Cities (NLC), "National Undoing Racism Day" rally held at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. The September 19 event kicked off NLC's "National Campaign to Undo Racism" which began with a speech by NLC President Wichita Mayor Bob Knight. Mayor Knight said, "Exactly 150 years ago today, September 20, 1850, a new law was enacted to abolish the slave trade in the nation's capital. I am here today because I am committed to continuing the work started 150 years ago in our nation's capital."
Mayor Coles noted the tremendous work on human dignity and human rights taking place in the state of Idaho. "The Association of Idaho Cities, 201 cities, have taken this year, their entire conference was about human dignity, human rights, diversity, the training, the discussion, the debates with the challenge being to promote human dignity day after day, year after year. We'll do it. We'll get it done for the next generation."
Representative Asa Hutchinson (AK) commented on the devastating effects of racial profiling. He stated, "I believe in this nation today we have a problem with racial profiling ... As a first step in this process (to eliminate the practice of racial profiling) the House Judiciary Committee passed the Traffic Stops Statistics Act which creates a unique pilot program to give the nation greater information on racially based traffic stops but we must do more than study this issue. It is important that Congress dedicate sufficient resources to enforce our civil rights laws."
Debra Carr, Chair, White House Task Force, World Conference Against Racism, noted that the "conversation about racism is no longer a black, white conversation. We are a nation of diversity. We are a nation composed of not only blacks and whites, but also Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, and many others who make this country great."
The National Undoing Racism Rally serve as a national focal point of community-led efforts to eliminate racism and promote racial justice. The rally was aimed at raising awareness about racism and the many challenges that still exist for minorities in this nation. Other rally speakers included Minnetonka (MN) Mayor and NLC Second Vice President Karen Anderson, Ben Johnson, Director, Director, White House Office, President's Initiative for One America and Sonia Jarvis, George Washington University.
